Sleep Patterns

Sleep Patterns is a project exploring the manipulation of found sound. The line between music and sound is constantly blurred, as ambient sound design becomes musical and music drifts into noise. The twelve pieces are simply named after their track number, encouraging the listener to impose their own meaning on the atmosphere.

The album was created almost entirely using non-musical sound sources such as office stationary, garden tools and a kitchen sink, combined with more traditional instruments like violin and piano (often treated to the point of not being recognisable). The resulting sound worlds contrast from the dense building quiet roar on “One” to the claustrophobic sounds inside a piano on “Six”, the soothing glass tones on “Nine” and the mournful drones and bells on “Twelve”.
